Situations›When a carer can't continue

Planning for when a carer can't continue.

For parents, partners and family who have been the main support for an adult with disability, and for the person themselves. We plan before it becomes a crisis, and keep the person's support going.

How we approach it

Families often call us about exactly this. We plan for it before it happens, with everyone involved. If you're the one who's been holding everything together, we'll help you put some of it down.

Questions

Things people ask us

Can I call before the person I care for agrees?

Yes. You can ask us anything without their permission. To start supports, they need to agree, or a guardian or nominee with the authority to decide does.

What if I need a break?

Tell us. Families step back and step in all the time. Nothing about their support stops because you do.

What if my parent can't look after me anymore?

Families often call us about exactly this. We plan for it before it happens, with everyone involved.

Do they need an NDIS plan first?

To start funded supports, yes, or to be eligible for one. We can help work out which, and what to do next.
